When we purchased our 1997 Ford Four Winds Class C RV known as Axl Roads, we knew there would be plenty of opportunities to make it our own.
While repairs and maintenance kept the RV running safely, upgrades and modifications helped transform it into a more comfortable, functional, and FUN place to travel.
Over the years, we completed a variety of RV makeover projects large and small that improved everything from seating and flooring to lighting and storage.
This guide brings those projects together in one place so you can check out ideas, learn from our experience, and decide which upgrades might work for your own RV.
Major RV Interior Renovation Projects
RV Flooring Replacement
One of the most significant changes we made was removing the original RV carpeting and exploring replacement flooring options.
Older RV carpeting can trap dirt, pet hair, moisture, and odors, making it one of the first areas many owners consider updating.
RV Makeover: Removing Your RV Carpet to Install Vinyl Planks (or Not)
What we learned:
- Flooring choices affect comfort, maintenance, and durability.
- Pet owners should think carefully about cleaning requirements.
- Installation can be easier than expected, but the material you choose matters!
Painting RV Cabinets & Hardware
Cabinets occupy a large percentage of an RV’s interior visual space. A fresh coat of paint can dramatically change an older motorhome.

Why we did it:
- Brighten the interior
- Modernize the appearance
- Refresh worn cabinetry without replacement
Updating the RV Booth
The dinette booth serves as one of the most heavily used areas in many RVs.
We updated our booth to improve comfort, functionality, and personality while creating a space for our own travel style (read: reading, games, map gazing).

Quick RV Upgrade Projects

Interior LED Light Bulb Upgrade
Replacing aging interior bulbs improved efficiency and modernized lighting throughout the RV.

Cosmetic Updates & Finishing Touches

What We Learned About RV Modifications
After completing numerous upgrades and makeover projects, several lessons became clear:
- Function should come before appearance. The projects we appreciated most were the ones that improved daily usability, not just looks.
- Small projects can have a big impact. Some of the least expensive modifications delivered the biggest quality-of-travel improvements.
- Older RVs are ripe for personalization. They become more enjoyable when you’re customizing them to fit how you actually travel.
- Not every trend is worth following! Durability, maintenance, and comfort matter more than whatever is popular in RV design.
